Solar power 'generates £13m a year' - 20/06/2013

A new report has highlighted the impact of renewable energy developments in the UK.

According to data collected by independent energy supplier SmartestEnergy, solar power in the UK currently generates £13.5 million worth of electricity a year.

SmartestEnergy's head of generation Iain Robertson explained interest grew in the benefits of renewable energy a few years ago as a result of the rising cost of gas and electricity.

He said: "For businesses, farms and organisations faced with steep rises in energy costs, investing in their own renewable energy projects can generate significant savings and help them remain competitive."

SmartestEnergy will soon publish a full breakdown of independent renewable energy projects as part of its Energy Entrepreneurs 2013 report.

This comes only a short time after it was revealed that solar panels are going to be used by Staffordshire County Council to cut its business electricity bills. The local authority is set to add the devices to the roofs of school buildings across the region to generate green power.
